Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center Recognizes National Volunteer Week – April 10-16

April 06, 2011

Fredericksburg, VA – April 6, 2011 -- The staff, administration and physicians of Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center (SRMC) are taking time during National Volunteer Week – April 10-16 – to recognize the more than 200 volunteers who lend a helping hand to the people who work and received care at Virginia’s newest hospital. The celebration recognizes the commitment that volunteers have made to the success and growth of the hospital.

Since the opening of SRMC last June, volunteers have assisted in more than 25 departments, including the inpatient units, the emergency department, the gift shop, the main information desk surgical services and special events. Their contribution, which now totals more than 23,000 hours, has been a great benefit to the patients, guests and staff of Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center, who now count on the assistance of volunteers to provide the highest level of customer service.

"The volunteers of Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center are exceptional because of their dedication to their community," said Tim Tobin, President & CEO of SRMC. "From the time when HCA was asked to bring a new hospital to the area, we noticed the enthusiasm of this region’s residents toward making this a great place to live, work and go for medical care. Over the last 10 months, they have shown the same level of devotion toward improving the hospital experience for every patient and guest."

Ranging in age from 14 to 84, SRMC volunteers represent 13 local schools and 6 colleges, reside in five counties and the City of Fredericksburg, and come from all walks of life, including government, military, emergency services, law, accounting, finance, teacher and parent. A team that includes natives of 26 states as well as locals who have been born and raised in the Fredericksburg region, their birthdays spread out across 205 days of the calendar and their goals range from careers in medicine to a desire to give back to the community.

SRMC volunteers will be rewarded with celebrations throughout the week, including a recognition dinner on Thursday, April 14 at 7 p.m. Among the honorees will be nearly 100 volunteers who have contributed in excess of 100 hours of service in the inaugural year, including 25 who have given more than 200 hours of service. Nearly 1-in-10 volunteers have been with the hospital since opening day.
