Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center Volunteers Record 10,000th Hour of Service
October 25, 2010
180+ locals notch milestone figure in less than five months
Fredericksburg, VA, October 25, 2010 - The volunteers of Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center reached 10,000 hours of donated service today, less than five months after the opening of the area"s newest hospital. The 10,000 hours, an average of more than 70 per operating day, was a combined contribution of more than 180 individuals from Spotsylvania County, Caroline County, King George County, Louisa County, Stafford County, Prince William County and the City of Fredericksburg.
"The 10,000 hour contribution of our volunteers is most significant in terms of what it has meant for our patients, guests and staff," said Tim Tobin, President and CEO of SRMC. "The addition of more smiling faces and more helpful hands allows us to achieve our mission to provide outstanding patient care to all who enter our facility. The contribution of 10,000 hours demonstrates the strong commitment of the community to our opening and to our continued success."
Volunteers at SRMC have contributed in more than 35 different roles throughout the facility, including greeting at the main information desk, staffing the gift shop, assisting in the emergency department and facilitating service within medical units. Ranging from high school students to retirees, they hail from 21 states, every branch of the military, nine local high schools, and more than 65 careers and career paths.
Their 10,000 hour contribution over a span of 20 weeks includes 24 days where they contributed more than 100 hours and an active streak of 17 consecutive weeks where they gave more than 400 hours of their time. To date, 23 individuals have given more than 100 hours each, including four volunteers who have contributed more than 200 hours apiece. Another 51 volunteers have donated in excess of 50 hours.
"The true heart of a hospital is in its people, and our volunteers are an integral part of our heart," continued Tobin. "Their contributions to date have been nothing short of spectacular and we look forward to celebrating many more milestones in the near future."
SRMC continues to accept applications for volunteering from individuals age 14 and older who are willing to contribute four hours a week for a period of six months. To find out more about the volunteer program or to get an application, please call 540-498-4142.
